Oakstead works with hardwood floors in two ways: restoring existing wood floors through refinishing, and installing new hardwood for a fresh foundation. We explain the options and the steps so you know what to expect before you request an estimate.
Refinishing
Renews the surface of existing wood floors.
Installation
Lays new hardwood for a fresh floor base.
Hardwood options
Species, grain, stain, and finish
Species, board width, and finish each change how a floor looks and wears. We help match these choices to the way the room is used.
Species and grain profile
Oak, walnut, and other hardwood species differ in color, hardness, and grain pattern. Wider boards show more of the grain, while narrower boards give a more even, traditional character.
Stains and protective coatings
Stains adjust tone while leaving the grain visible. Protective coatings, from matte to satin finishes, determine sheen and how the floor handles daily wear.
Project process
From assessment to cured topcoat
Each project follows a clear sequence so you know what happens at every stage, from the first floor assessment to the final coat curing.
01 Initial assessment
We inspect the boards, subfloor, and existing finish to decide between refinishing and installation.
02 Sanding and prep
Floors are sanded in stages to remove old finish and level the surface before any stain.
03 Stain and sealing
The chosen stain is applied evenly, then sealed to protect the wood beneath the topcoat.
04 Topcoat and cure
Protective topcoats are applied in thin coats and allowed to cure fully before heavy use.
